Craftsman has some new drills on the warehouse stocking cart.

Twist drills? No.

Brad points? Nine.

Spade bits? Nyet.

Forstners? Nope.

I'll give you a hint.

A five piece set of Ship Auger bits.

All right...

What's a ship auger bit?

They're very heavy duty bits. Designed to self-feed drill through soft or hard wood.

They're a single-edged cutting and scoring bit, updated from the old taper-tanged bit brace end to a heavy hex pattern that powered drills can really hold on to.

There are a few 17 inch long bits in the set, with the balance being the standard length bits.

Sizes include: 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch diameters.

Although they'll probably not be used to bore holes for wooden pins used in ship and timber-frame construction, they still work mighty fine in installing electrical and plumbing work between wooden framing members.

The cutting edges are advertised to be strong enough to drill through nails.

I wouldn't want to test that claim too often.

The set is also a throw-back to the old Craftsman "Special Value" days.

A mn 66263, five piece auger set goes for Special Value price of $54.99.

If you should find yourself in a well equipped hardware store, like OSH, check out how much competitor's single quantities of Ship Auger bits go for.

You'll be VERY pleased with this brand new Craftsman Special Value package of bits.

:)

I got a power auger bit myself.

Two INCHES in diameter!

Five bucks at a swap meet.

How could I say no?

All I need now is a Morse tapered end electric drill, like that 3/4 inch job in the Army (that almost broke my arms).
