They replaced what was once an all wood bodied plane. But, for a brief time period, there were "transitional" wood planes that combined a smooth wooden sole, with the ultra adjustability of a metal top section. The Sears 1912 catalog is THE PLACE to go, to see all of the transitional planes for sale, along with a smidgen of metal bench planes. |
