If anyone is interested in a complete text on sharpening a wide variety of tools, using a large selection of different sharpening tools/techniques, check out Taunton Press's "The Complete Guide to Sharpening".

It is a currently published book that you can probably pickup off your local bookstore's craft section's shelf.

It is written by Leonard Lee (Veritas tools and Lee Valley Tools), with a copyright of 1995.

He brings the concept of edge shape into focus as an integral part of the sharpening process.

You can produce a super keen edge, that will crumble minutes into use if the tool's use and edge geometry is not taken into account.

This explains why you'll never find a hollow ground axe blade. The axe is an impact driven tool that uses a convex grind to keep the keen edge stoutly backed up with metal.

The book is a great read, and an excellent continuing reference source.
