I've been asking the same question, and I've been asking professionals. What I've come to learn is that radial arm saws

are one of the most dangerous power tools you can own. Since radial

arms move in all three dimensions, they are more likely to get out of alignment once they have been moved. They are not very accurate if

you are making furniture or something where precise cutting is required. I also heard from people that like raidal arm saws, but the

conclusion I've come to is this. Buy a table saw with a good fence system before you buy a radial arm and if you can afford both, then it's nice to have both. I personally do not plan to ever buy one.

For 27 years I owned one radial Arm saw. During this same time I owned three table saws with lots of time when I had no table saw at all. However, we recently moved out of state and I permanently loaned the radial saw to a friend and bought a Sears 10" contractor saw. I wanted to get more serious about cabinetry. There are times when I wish I had the radial saw but for what I'm doing now, I couldn't be without a table saw. It is much more versatile than a redial. If money were no object, I'd have both or at least one of the sliding compound mitre saws. Whatever you do, buy the best you can as it is a long term investment. By the way, someone said that the radial saw is dangerous. That's true but so is the table saw. Learn to work with all of the safety features in place and make sure that they are installed properly.

Your workshop space may be the deciding factor.
A Radial Arm Saw can be used in a small shop with zero clearance requirements behind the saw.
A Table Saw needs LOTS of room. Many users of table saws use a moveable caster system to move the saw to a place in their small to medium sized shop where it has the room to be used.
The Radial Arm Saw excels at doing crosscuts and can do ripping. The Table Saw excels at doing ripping and can do crosscuts.

I am at the point of buying my first major wood tool. I have a miter saw and a circular saw but the question of radial arm vs. table has me
stumped. Is one better then the other to start with? or in the long run.

If I had to have only one stationary power tool I would keep my table saw. I use it more than any tool in my shop. The table saw is perfect to rip stock and with the proper extensions and jigs will do most sawing operations well.If you can afford it buy a saw with a cast iron table, it will stay true longer and take more abuse. I do not have a radial arm saw yet and there has been times I would have loved to, mainly when cross cutting wide irregular items (counter tops),but have always managed without one. For cross cutting anything less than 6" you can't beat a compound miter saw, it is silky smooth and costs far less than a radial arm saw.

I have a 10" contractors table saw, a miter saw and a radial arm saw.

In my garage which is 24x24 the table saw is in the middle of the shop and the other two saws and my planer are at the opening of the garage door for ease of cutting rough stock to size. Each of these tools serves a useful purpose. If I had to choose one over the other it would be the table saw, providing you have the room to allow the saw to be used the way it was designed. IE ripping, cross cutting. You also can make a table sled for cutting large panels and accurate cross-cutting.

I would also buy a table saw. Working at Sears for the past 5 years we sell a lot more table saws than radial saws. In fact we carry 4 different table saws and only 1 radial arm saw. The table saw 29941 is the most popular saw. If you haven't bought your saw yet now is the time. Craftsman is changing sources and we are closing out all all our table saws so we have room for the new ones. You can save anywhere from $50 - $100.

I have worked with wood most of my life from carpenter to hobbiest using all types of saws. I presently have a 36' by 50' woodworking shop and recently bought a contractor series 10" tablesaw. The tablesaw is the hub of my shop. I also have a radial saw and would not take anything for it but,
The tablesaw is my #1 saw due to it's versitility & accuracy!

Check out New3 Yankee Workshop and watch how often Norm goes to the Table saw vs. the Radial Arm. My preference however is both if you can spare the dough$$$. Besides, what's more important than your tools?? Shhh my wife might be listening...Out
