| Adam | June 17th, 2005 03:16 AM June 16, 2005 Planes in 1957 I just received an eBay won 1957 Craftsman Hand tool catalog. My Fore plane is on page 28. Craftsman had an 18 inch "No. 6" Fore plane and a 22 inch long "No. 7" Jointer plane. Both planes use 2-3/8 inch wide blades. The above two planes were offered ONLY with corrugated bottoms, with the 9 inch (No. 4) Smooth and 14 inch (No. 5) Jack planes offered with only smooth bottoms. These two planes use the more common 2 inch wide blades. The Smoothing plane in the photo clearly shows corrugated sides. So my corrugated side and bottom Fore plane meshes with the catalog descriptions. All of the above planes are listed as Sears best planes. There is also another Jack plane offered (without any corrugations), that was made in West Germany. The West German documentation lends credence to a couple of my Dunlap planes having plane blades Made in Germany. I think back then "German" steel was considered of higher quality. There's an 8 inch Smoothing plane offered with a smaller 1-3/4 inch blade, that was made in West Germany. This plane's dimensions are similar to the Stanley No. 3 plane. All of these Numbered planes are using Stanley's plane numbering system. If you ever want to find a missing link plane, look for the Craftsman labeled plane blade and cap iron with a Stanley (Bailey) souled plane, with Rosewood tote and knob (tall pattern), labeled 5-1/4. It's made in the US of A. The official story is this 1-3/4 inch wide blade plane was used in Trade School shops to help "young people" learn plane techniques, without the weight of standard No. 5, 2 inch wide blade, Jack planes. I don't know. But, I do know this plane has very good balance. And, for light cutting is a joy to use. |
