| Adam | May 5th, 2005 04:32 PM I'm still looking for a good vintage bench vise. But, I've been using an old Monarch Lion brand 229 Carriage Maker's vise for precision work. The jaws have an area of 4-1/2 inches by 2-1/2 inches deep and are smooth faced. It has lead and wood soft jaws I've custom made for it. The head profile is analogous to a standard pattern Crescent wrench (bench vise) to the Craftsman new Beak-jaw pattern adjustable wrench (Carriage maker's vise). Needless to say, I don't beat on it. The disadvantage of vise shopping is anything on eBay is going to be prohibitively heavy to ship. And, I always need to have a swap meet cart (or hand truck) when I'm out and around hunting for one. But, I'll get one. It's only a matter of time. |
