| toolfool | April 26th, 2005 10:30 PM I recently acquired a vintage drill press (1971)model 113.24591. Before I start the cleaning process, I detected that the chuck is bent as drill wobbles runout in the quill is good. So I need a new chuck, there in lies my question,s. The chuck is a 33 taper, but there is a pinned adapter which screws onto the chuck. I have seen a lot of chucks with MT or JT but this is the first one I have seen like this. Question 2or observation Can I use a regular 33 taper without the extra security of the pinned adapter. I cannot find a chuck other than SEARS and they want 75.00 bucks. I will cease here and see if somebody can help before I ask any more questiond I have been a Craftsman custome for over 40 years. TOOLFOOL |
| Joe | April 29th, 2005 07:43 AM Your tool was made by Emerson Electric. Find a distributor of their product and skip the Sears markup. If not, I'm sure maybe Jacobs makes this chuck for Sears and Emerson, so why not inquire with them? |
| toolfool | May 3rd, 2005 02:00 AM Thanks Joe I have spent hours surfing the net and only found one chuck and that was a used one on E Bay. I will try Emerson. Again I was just wundering if I could'nt just tap a 33 Taper on it and go. I have a Bufalo table model that I have used for years and it just taps on. I have been in Maintenance for over forty years and this is the first chuck that i have seen with that (safety retainer) for want of another word. toolfool |
| Adam | May 3rd, 2005 12:35 PM I don't know how or why that short little Jacobs taper holds drill press chucks on. But, it does wonderfully (as long as both male and female JTs have been wiped off with an oily rag and there is no corrosion or a burr involved. Great news! Jacobs is owned by Sears OEM Danaher. These would probably be the people to talk to about the pin. Danaher can be reached at 1(800)866-5753 Never mind the above. Chapter 17 of the Armstrong Industrial Hand Tools catalog has Danaher's Jacobs chuck offerings. And.. You have (as everybody knows) [Wha... da...] a Jacobs mounted Taper Mounted Heavy Duty Model chuck there don't cha know. Furthermore, you have either a (1) Equipped with positive drive slot or (2) Equipped with pin type positive drive. [I knew that...?? Positive drive... Ya. I'm positive I knew that. I think? Do ya see why I post a lot? Learn'n new stuff every day, just like my sales days] And, that would be models... Ah..Yes.. Psst! Joe would be able to relate to this little catalog product spec. abnormality. There are no (1) category chucks. But, there are category (3) chucks.. that are not on the product legend. What I said before. Talk to Danaher. This info is reaped from the Armstrong Industrial Hand Tools catalog P9-200, with accompanying (if you specifically ask for) Price Sheet P9-201 (effective April 4, 2005). They're all number 3 Jacobs Taper mounted. Maximum capacity ranges from .5 to .8 inches in diameter. Warning, some can not close below 1/8 inch in diameter. Prices range from $124.81 to $150.95. Ou....ch! But don't forget.. They're genuine, made in US of A, Jacobs Industrial tools. You may want to revisit the Sears parts option. Oh! Call a few service centers in your area. They may have an industrial drill press that met an untimely death, uent - with the chuck you need. Sounds like you've got a really heavy duty drill press. A little extra time to find a matching heavy duty Jacobs chuck is well spent. See you later, on the CC board. |
