Chickey 12" Miter Saw Blade
April 20th, 2005 11:45 PM
Hey folks...quick question. I am looking to purchase a new 80 tooth blade for my 12" Craftsman Pro Miter Saw. The blade that I'm interested in is a Craftsman model 26785. The packaging indicates it can be used with miter, table and radial saws. Stamped on the blade itself, however, is a rating of 3,500 MAX RPM. The no load speed of my saw is 4,000 RPM, which I believe is pretty standard for most miter saws. So now I'm confused - do I believe the blade or the packaging?

Thanks in advance for any insight you may be able to offer,
Colin

Joe No...danger.

Colin:

Go with your doubts....the blade is not safe. The blade needs to exceed the free running speed of the saw.

Foresight is better than no site. Doesn't the owner's manual give a stock # for the blades that could be used?

I believe many do, check it out...

Joe -

Agree, I think you are right and I'll stay away. Believe it or not, the manual provides no guidance on blade selection or compatibility. I wish Craftsman would market a Professional version 12" fine finish miter blade, especially since they already sell the saw!

Thanks again!
Colin

Colin:

I'll look in the Fastenal catalog, but as I recall, I didn't see a 12" blade there. I specifically looked for you after seeing your post here.

Chickey Thank you!

Thanks Joe, much appreciated! I'm surprised the only blade Sears stocks for this saw is a lower end carbide model Hmmmm...

Thanks again,
Colin

Drop me an e-mail as a reminder. I will check in the Fastenal book when I get home.

Chickey Miter Saw Blade

Did a little more digging and found out these blades are manufactured for Sears by Vermont American. I Emailed them and they were tremendously helpful. Here's what the rep at VA told me:

"Thank you for your inquiry regarding the 26785 Professional 12”X80 tooth Circular saw blade.

This blade is rated at 3500 RPM’s. The blade is a heavy duty (thick) plate blade with European (large) carbide tips. Our blades are tested at much greater speeds than we rate them. This blade would be ok at 4,000 RPM BUT, Unless you have a heavy duty Miter saw I would not recommend such a heavy blade. Even though this blade would work on miter your saw, it is more suitable for Stationary Table and Radial Saws. This is due to the (light weight) of most miter saws.

We would recommend a different Craftsman 12X80 circular saw blade # 26802 which is a thin plate blade and more suitable for miter saws. This blade will also be much easier on your saw because it is not as heavy as the other blade."

This was exactly what I needed to know. Talk about great service from a Sears supplier. I'll definitely buy more of their products -- plus they are "Made in the USA".

Regards,
Colin

Yes! Most of the "cutting tool" style stuff (bits, blades, taps and dies" are made by VA.

Good stuff..

Good research work, Colin. I've taught you well. LOL :)!!!

Adam Great research

I will relate your results to the Tool Associates to the three Sears and five OSHs I frequent.

Thank you.
