Troutbeck Table Saw purchase
April 20th, 2005 08:22 AM
I'm looking to buy a new table saw to replace a portable I've had for a few years. I'm looking for a really good one but can't afford a commercial grade.

Craftsman has a cpouple that look pretty good. One is the $649 job and the other is the $949 model. Is the more expensive model worth the money?

Anyone have either of these?

Thanks, Trout

I bought the 22124 in December and like it very much. I compared it against the others available at the time and in that price range they were all contractor models. On sale with C Club I paid $725 delivered. Cabinet type saws are just so much better.

What portable one do you have? What happened to it? What's the model #?

Many of the newer ones are made overseas. Me, personally I would skip them.

I agree, I looked at Craftsman and Grizzly and their was no comparison. Price and quality, Grizzly is the winner.

When you are comparing items between a store and remote ordering (catalog or internet), please don't forget to factor in shipping and handling charges.

Those cool, old, heavy, cast-iron tools look fantastic, until you factor in the seller is in New England and the freight charges to you are going to be huge.

The Sears cast iron table saws in the stores are very good units... made in China [Back! Back! Down!].

I haven't looked at the new Grizzly units for a while.

So, I can't offer an informed opinion at this time.

In Feb. I bought my new craftsman table saw model 221240 with the biesmeyer fence. It replaces a 1022 grizzly I bought 20 years ago and never happy with . For one thing the fence that came with the saw never worked right . I was always fighting to get the fence to aign with blale . I findly the replace the fence with one from sears. also the 1022 vidrated to much . I was NEVER happy with the grizzly they are of low quality. My new craftsman 221240 profssional works great the fence locks parallel with the blale every time. In my book craftsman is the way to go. Dave you do not know what you what you are talking about and have not really looked the saws out. Price is not eveything you get what you pay for remember a grizzly is sight unseened. There are no local grizzly stores to go and look at there products. You got to be able touch and feel the products you buy. AS for me I only buy quality products (craftsman delta porter-cable dewalt} just to name a few and only at my local outlet. Oh buy the way my grizzly 1022 is for sale . And I will never buy another grizzly as long as I live.

Mr. Wa the $650 to $900 job??

I just bought the $650 unit last night. It took about 3 hrs to assemble and tune. Wood mag has an article this month that compares that unit and about 5 others. It came out #2, with only the Rigid sold at Home Depot beating it out due to the ability to do 32" RH side rips. My neighbor has that Rigid. I've used it a few times for bigger stuff my smaller Craftsman 10" couln't do (as well as helped him set it up), and from a setup perspective, (quality of parts / workmanship) I love my new '2114' 10" when compared to the rigid. Haven't had a chance to do any work with the 2114 yet, so stay tuned. But, the Wood article makes me feel I have nothing to worry about. As far as the $900 CR 10", I don't much like the Besmire fence, and not worth the extra $$ in my book. The Sears Rep mentioned yesterday that it's the same 'saw' just upgraded fence and has the outfeed and extended RH wing. I can build those for less$$.
