| Adam | April 19th, 2005 02:54 AM The traditional "safe" finish for eating utensils (treenware) and bowl is mineral oil. Nice clear finish - with no surface coat and can possibly gather stuff like food dust. Think nachos in your beautiful turned Maple bowl. You are now the proud owner of an orange inside colored Maple bowl. There is a commercial product called "Salad Bowl finish" that behaves like Lacquer (surface coat) that can be used also. I believe Woodcraft Supply carries it. The reason I mentioned toys in the post subject line is little children often try to eat their toys. Watco's petroleum based chemicals would probably not be good for junior. Accelerated drying Tung Oil is also not advisable. I guess there is no universal finish. Good. If there were, projects would start to all look finished alike. |
