Most likely the portable saw you refering to is direct drive meening the arbor is attached directly to the motor. So in order to make the arbor longer you won't also have to change the motor. My best suggestion would be to get a straight cut router bit at the desired with of the dado you wish to cut set the router bit at the desired depth and use a straight edge to be sure your accurate.
