| Harp | July 16th, 2001 09:45 PM I have tried many things in the past urethanes and the like, but car wax has worked better than them all and if the wax wears off and a little rust starts to form from condensate wax takes it right off. Harp.. |
| Bryan Myers | May 31st, 2004 07:44 AM I found a post on Owwm (Old wood working machines) followed suggestions with good results. Start with a razor blade and remove most of rust then polish with a fine wet/dry sandpaper. I actuallly used a fine scotchbrite pad, some WD40 and a vibrating sander on cast table tops with excellent results. I suppose residue from wd40 could be bad for wood finish but I'm not building fine furniture. |
| Adam | February 1st, 2005 12:32 AM The suggestion of using the Scotch Brite pads is excellent. Almost everyone is familiar with the good ol' green pads that have seemingly been around forever. But, did you know they make different coarsenesses of this little beauty? The coarsenesses are color coded grey, burgundy (redish-brown) and green. The burgundy is fantastic for rust removal. I carry a strip of it around in my wallet. So I can identify maker's marks (with the seller's permission) of old heavily oxidized tools. Check your local Sear's paint department for it. |
| Joe | February 1st, 2005 08:10 AM I use them to clean up some lightly rusted areas (old vises, etc) and they work great! |
