This topic maybe a little dated but here goes.

The designs normally use this construction grade (2 by something) lumber that's stained and finished with a high-gloss clear finish (should the bed leak).

The bottom supports can either be large section "beams" with plywood covers.

Or, some designs take advantage of the high structural strength of honey-combed thinner sections of plywood.
