Joe Wanted: US made Craftsman Bench Vise
September 2nd, 2004 01:08 PM
If anyone has the #51856 Craftsman (6" Bench Vise) that is US made, I would like to buy it.

If you are Sears employee reading this and know if your store has a good display unit or new-old stock of this that is USA made (not Taiwanese made), please contact me at bigjfig@aol.com

If your store has one, please e-mail me the contact information of the store and person, so I may call Sears and see if they will do a transfer of the item to the NYC area so I can buy it at my store with my raincheck. Please give the person's name, store phone #, and store #, so I can give all that to Sears.

I have a raincheck for this item from Sears and I have been trying to find a US made version of this vise. The current iterations are imports. I want only the USA made version.

Of course, if you have a good used Craftsman unit out there, I'm interested to hear about that, too.

Thanks,
Joe

I don't have a USA made bench vise. In fact, I was planning on buying one for myself (who says Christmas is only for everybody else, I've been a good boy!).

I agree to your aversion to Taiwanese made tools. I'm sure they work hard to make a good tool, but dangit, I want a tool that works as hard as I do AND has Made in USA stamped in the side. I've decided, I'll buy US made, even if I have to wait or buy a different brand.

Fact:

The 20+ year old US made tools I have will easily outlast their Chinese counterparts. I too, avoid the non-US stuff like the plague.

I am told that the 51872 is made in the US and is actually a Wilton in disguise. I'm going to work with Sears to see if they will give me that one instead. No one seems to be able to find me a USA made 51856.

I agree in keeping our country working. The first way to do that is to try to support them by buying US made. For anyone that says it doesn't matter, I just hope your job never gets exported!!

Hey Joe,
As has already been WELL pointed out imports, regardless of origin, Asian, European or ? Cannot hold up as well as the ones we make. Are we harder on our tools or do we just expect more from them? I dunno, but for 40+ years I've been buying tools and haven't been able to find any that hold up as well as USA made. Can't find a USA made Craftsman? Buy the Wilton or let your browser do the searching across the Internet for a good USA made substitute. Check with a MAC or Snap-On tool guy. I've followed many of them until their trucks stop just to get the odd tool.

Maybe if Sears hears it enough times, they will change their ways.

Yup, you can bet the Mac and Snapon units ARE Wiltons in disguise. The USA made Sears ones are.

There is one USA made Sears one left, a #51872, according to them. I'm going to see if they substitute.

As for quality, most of the US made Sears stuff I have is the first and only version I've ever owned. I take care of my tools----I have owner's manuals, parts lists, and receipts for almost everything I've ever bought. If I inherited it, I still have the owner's manual for whatever it is..I've contacted the Sears vendor over the years and had them dig out the really old stuff ;).

The tool trucks are good, but most of those guys want a mint for even the trade ins---they are a little big for their britches in most cities. I live in NYC :).

MAC is under the Stanley umbrella and made tools for Sears at one time.

Still working on this. The store up here in Mansfield, NJ near my sister has two USA made units, but they are the 4 and 5 inch models :(.

The six inch one is made in China. And yes, you can tell the difference!!!

I'm going to try to get them to order the 51872 model and let's hope it's a USA made one!!!

Supposedly made by Wilton (actually, Columbian, which is owned by Wilton).

I have to call Sears and see what they will do.

Joe Still looking :)

Sears says the #51872 is a catalog only item, although the online catalog doesn't say that, specifically.

I'm not done with this yet, but maybe someone out there reading this has one :).

Readers: If you see a 6" #51856 in your store that's American made, please advise! I will try to contact the store and buy it.

Joe Kudos!

I ordered the #51872. If it's American made, we are in. Sears is doing the right thing.

One reason why they continue to get my tool $$$ :).

Joe Got it...

Got it, but it doesn't show it's made in ANY country (USA or otherwise).

I'm in the process of checking this with Wilton to be sure.
