| joshua2415 | October 17th, 2006 08:14 PM I'm seeking information on a ratchet my buddy has. The actual ratchet is located in the center of the tool. Kinda like a slide bar that is centered and has a ratchet head. It has a wood knob on one end. I have only seen one in person. Recently I have seen one on ebay going for right at hundred bucks. The item# on ebay is 300038722442. Take a look. When was this thing made? Thanks. |
| Randal | October 18th, 2006 02:19 AM You have found the rare breed, that most of us only get to see in pictures. Yes the price you have seen is right. Mechanics seemed to like them for a lot of work with the engine heads. The only other tool I see searched for and mentioned here, is the Craftsman multi wrench. A "boxed" wrench, with two ends that you spin around to the proper size, eight wrenchs in one. These are still made by another company (Innovative products of America), where as that ratchet isn't. When Adam gets his new (1955) Craftsman mechanics hand tool catalog, maybe we can get closer to the date. FORWARNING, there are NO REBUILD KITS available for this.... :( Where as the multi wrench, is MUCH less likely to wear out. (friend has his fathers/maybe gramps, old one, for which I have been told I could have it when he retires, kids have their own tools, and aren't interested) |
| Adam | October 22nd, 2006 01:21 PM October 22, 2006 Wittle ratchet I still have not received my 1955 Craftsman Mechanics' tool catalog. But, it turns out I have this ratchet, sort of. I bought, what I thought was a really cool old Craftsman "stubby" ratchet. It is most definitely not the current teardrop type, highly-polished ratchet, available NOW at Sears. It has a wing shaped handle, no socket quick-release button and sports the inverted V type selector lever. It did look oddly familiar though. No. No one would do such a heinous thing to a Craftsman ratchet! The black handle side of, what turns out to be, a speed-ratchet was sawed OFF! It is fully functional and a great little tool. But, its collectable value has been reduced to pretty much near zero. The bad news is there are no rebuild kits for any of the non-socket quick-release ratchets. The good news, upon exploratory "surgery" on my ratchet, is that the ratchet parts are absolutely standard among ratchets of its day. If you need a "restoration", find a 3/8 inch drive, V-selector type, standard ratchet and borrow its parts. The process can be speeded up, tremendously, if you can locate a "Packrat" PMT in your area who "saves parts". Otherwise, to eBay! |

| Adam | October 30th, 2006 10:11 PM October 30, 2006 Just sold A Craftsman speed ratchet just sold on eBay for just under 90 dollars. A considerable bargain from the normal winning price of $150. There are some excellent pictures of it on the eBay site you may want to take a look at. |
