| Adam | July 22nd, 2005 04:00 AM July 22, 2005 Flexible Shaft machine I must have been rambling too much in my previous post. I'm looking for a flexible shaft stand alone machine (vintage 1930 to late 40's). They're hard to miss. The early models are about the size of a 55 gallon trash can, with a full-size induction motor (½ hp) on top of a pedestal, supported by a wheeled base (stand alone units). By 1949 they were reduced to shafts simply attached to induction motors, workbench units. The shaft is huge (3/4 to one inch easily from the catalog illustrations). These old ones relied on torque transmission, as opposed to the new lighter flex shafts (Foredom, Dremel, Craftsman) relying on high speed - low torque. They have gone the way of the dodo bird and the "swing" saw. I need to find a functioning one in "good" condition. I'm sure there would be absolutely no luck in finding specialty parts (like a new shaft core). They were offered as both Craftsman and Dunlap units. |
