Wanted: Old lower roll away box to match my top one. I have a ten drawer top box that was purchased new by my father back in the sixties. The box is grey with red drawers rather than red with grey. I would like to find a match to it in the New England area.

I know exactly which one you want since I own it :). Paid $50 for it at an estate sale (top and bottom), restored it, sent in the photos to Sears, was published in 2002!!! :).

I then found a 1968 top version out for trash three blocks away. Hauled it into my '84 Oldsmobile Delta 88 (read: BIG TRUNK), and restored that too. I plan to send photos to the Craftsman club on it.

These show up on Ebay from time to time....

I just saw a pretty nice top box identical to mine on ebay. If it was the bottom box it would have been sold! I couldn't figure out how to paste the link so just cut and paste.

Max:

I have that EXACT box from 1960. It's WELL made. I accidentally painted it all red when I "restified" it after getting it it from a yard sale. It was in dirty, terrible shape, but nothing some paint and sanding didn't take care of.

I paid $50 for the top and bottom unit (like what you want). That same setup is probably $250 from Sears today. I found a six drawer 1968 version of that box about a year later thrown out for trash.

I JUST missed another top and bottom set for free...lady gave it away before I got to her! :(.

I might be picking up a vintage scroll and table saw (both Sears) from a lady soon. Cross your fingers!

Joe Date stamp

On most Craftsman boxes, on the top chests, stamped in the left corner in the box is a month and year of manufacture (1-60, as an example) and usually Made in USA.

On the rollaways, it's stamped into the front frame.

I found the date this weekend while I was working in the garage. It's from 1966.

Thanks

Just like mine...another oldie goldie!

Aren't they well built?

They were definatley built much better in those days. They were obviously meant to last instead of replace. This one was used professionally until about 1976 when my Dad took a traveling job and needed portable cases. It was then used for home use until around 1991 when I bought my house. Now I use it almost daily in my garage where I work semi-professionally, part time.

I still can't find the matching bottom for sale anywhere. In fact I've only seen two and they were not for sale.

My bottom bax is a newer Craftsman (about 10 years old) and isn't buillt nearly as well. I have to keep fixing the drawers.

Joe They're out there

They are out there, I have seen them on Ebay from time to time. It appears they made them up till the early 80's that way, and then swapped colors and they got a different logo.

The older ones were better. Even the logos were a nice chrome/pot metal like a car emblem was. They can be polished up nicely.

The '68 6 drawer I found was missing that logo and the drawers were jammed/would lock. Someone must have slammed the drawer into the lock rod, bending it. I just tweaked it with a screwdriver and walah, it now locks!

Whenever I find these tossed out (I have at times), I grab 'em!!!!

Adam Tossed out stuff

Tossed out stuff is great. Even destroyed stuff still yields spare parts.

I have a 14" Craftsman emerald green Jack Plane. With a King's-Crown (mid 60's to early 70's) logo sunken into the cap iron. I'd be using it now, but its blade is gone. I could put any old plane blade in. But, the Craftsman logo is also on the blade.

I'm patient. All I need to find is a cracked sole plane with a good iron and I'm set.
