| Joe | October 19th, 2004 12:35 PM Probably one solid, old piece of equipment :). |
| Joe | February 28th, 2005 08:46 AM The fact that it's "old" and "in great shape" means it's a great tool! |
| Bryan | January 9th, 2006 03:33 PM Wondering if you've sold it yet-sounds pricey to me. Anyone buy or sell similar saw? I'm looking for guidelines. |
| Vinnie B | January 10th, 2006 05:09 AM Bryan, not sure if you are new to scrolling or not. This may be old news to you but here goes a few quick guidelines on scrolling. Most scroll saws have cast iron bases. The table top is better if that is cast irom also, better than alum. In scrolling, heavier equals better for less vibration. You will be better off with your saw on a seperate stand of its own as compared to on a bench for vibration purposes also. It can be common to mount the rear of the saw about 4 inches higher than the front so it tilts toward you making it easier to see the work. One of the more important features to look for is the ability to use pinless blades. The pinned blades are way to thick for doing even semi detailed fret work. Probably the reason the tilting head Craftsman scroll saws are and have been on close out for a while. Check out mikesworkshop.com for Flying Dutchman (FD)blades. Arguably the best in the world. The next best may be Olsen. Check out scrollsawer.com for loads of info. A fantastic scrolling forum also. A heavy solid unit securely mounted, a flat cast worktop coated with paste wax. Sharp FD blades of diff size, a pile of wood, hot coffee = hours of relaxation. |
